One thing I like about child care is that I start making up random lullabies all the time. They are simple, sometimes repetitive, and always lovely. They calm me as much as the children.

I'm going to get my drivers license again. I intend to keep it secret from my parents for as long as possible - so Papa won't buy me a car again - and to use it very little. It's not that I don't like driving, but I don't like having a car or relying on it. I am happier allowing a slower pace for my life. But the license itself is useful - not just for the emergencies my father preached at me, but also for special occasions. I have a wonderful, nefarious plan. It should be glorious. Muah ha ha.

I am weary, but calm. Life at Elisabeth's is uncomplicated; I have a well-defined purpose here: to take care of the children and Elisabeth. I include her because she is as delicate to handle as they, and tends to need my presence more urgently. (They suffer very little by having only Elisabeth around; she suffers much from lack of rest. This could affect them long-term, but does very little short-term.) So my responsibilities are mostly child care, but some food preparation. I feel useful in an environment where I WISH to be so. So life is easy for the next day or so.

I think part of the reason I like the cell phone is that I got it before anyone told me to. Plus I like electronic gadgets, especially if I can get as much usefulness out of them as is reasonable. My phone is my camera, my walkman, my flashlight, my alarm clock, my portable voice recorder, and general storage. I use it constantly, but I don't let it use me - when I don't want to get calls, I don't take them, easy as that.
