Ugh, how long since I've used the internet? Thursday?

I fear to look at Warfish.

But I skimmed all my livejournal stuff. Apparently I managed to not look at my friends page all during Blogathon. So... I'll just pretend most of that didn't happen.

As for me, Friday was a blast, though when it got late Ben excused himself for getting grumpy. But I got to make dinner for six and fend off come-ons from a short ex-army guy with massage certification. (And still get a massage out of it.) I got the feeling that he was trying to get me a little drunk, so I mostly insisted on making my own drinks. I also got to play Rock Band and watch a Miyuzaki film and see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for the fist time. And spend a good long time chatting with Ben. *smiles*

Yesterday was my Uncle Steve's retirement party (teacher for 35 years). Like all Porto family functions, there was more than enough food, and I was joyously stuffed. I also got to hear awesome tales from my Uncle Ken and play a Taboo-like game called Salad Bowl with everyone who stayed past 5. Heh. Someone said at the outset "It's a good thing Frank's not here this time, the answers will be easier - as long as Franny plays fair." (When Aristophanes came up later on, I had to defend myself against accusations that I'd put it in.) (Alex and Margaret were the really obnoxious ones, though - they each put in Millard Fillmore.)

And today I finished reading Thief of Time by Terry Pratchett. (Ben had instructed me to steal it, so I didn't take it until he'd put it back on his shelf and wasn't looking.) I am highly amused at the large number of references to Doctor Who and keep wondering if the Abbot's name is some variant of Cho-Ji (his chief acolyte is Rinpo, which made me think Kampo Rinposhe). Best of all was the point where I really NOTICED that Death's granddaughter is named SUSAN, in the form of a paragraph that could easily have been written about The Doctor instead. (I'd have written it here, but I haven't the book on me, here in Fremont). I also thoroughly enjoyed the large amount of death by chocolate.

Anyway. I'm staying with Elisabeth for a week to help her take care of her kids while her husband's away.

Doctor Who references? Wha-huh?

I love that book. It's one of the top of the series for me (the other's being Night Watch and Small Gods, I think, maybe one or two others - both of which, incidentally, feature Lu Tze. Hunh.)

Although my favorite character in the book is of course Ronnie :)

I'm glad you're having a good time with family. Millard Fillmore - what the heck. Be happy in all that you do, and have fun watching the kiddies!

...granted one or two are reaching a bit (Ronnie's dairy is much bigger on the inside), but they're there.

Family's good. But I will probably be thoroughly exhausted by the time the week is out.

I have to admit that I'm...hesitant. This from the girl who decided in 6th grade that the Hobbit was a cheap rip-off of Beowulf. Parallels, perhaps, but references seems less likely - although, I must admit that it is the case that ALL British people love Doctor Who, so who am I to argue? He's referenced nearly everything else :)

Yes, he references EVERYTHING. So I reserve the right to be thoroughly amused at what Susan says about her Grandfather.

Ah, but she's a recurring character. I think this is her third (and best) book, after Soul Music and Hogfather.

Who's to say he didn't always have it in mind? But it's just the one paragraph in Thief of Time that I adore, which I'm kicking myself for not having on hand.

Which paragraph are you looking for?
