So I decided to try listening to one of the Sapphire and Steel audios. It sort of worked, despite a rather convoluted story.
But the actress who played Sapphire had a voice slightly too high pitched, and the story left her too weak half way through, and momentarily even without her customary calm. What's more, another element, Ruby, had a voice that fit Sapphire better and a stronger role when Sapphire's was weak. So I kept mixing the two characters up, making it harder to follow the plot. (Particularly odd when Ruby was saying suggestive things about Sapphire and Steel.)
On the other hand, Steel was instantly recognizable from his sheer grouchiness. It made me laugh, really. The actor's voice sounded quite a bit like Gambon and the song In the Bleak Midwinter was plot-relevant, so I got flashes of Kazran Sardick here and there, but nothing too distracting.
As for the story? Sapphire and Steel got trapped in a series of plays that had been performed in a certain theater. They were *ahem* in grave danger of turning into fiction. One of them was based on Great Expectations and quite creepy. Steel figured out that the way to get out was to challenge the reality of the plays... which they did by making jokes. Yep. So at some point, Miss Havisham says her usual "Did I never give you love?!" and he replies with "I certainly hope you didn't!" As for Sapphire, well, one of her solutions was a slightly bawdy limerick!
Things went quickly from there... Downer Ending though. And... vaguely reminiscent of Assignment 6
