*looks askance at the fandom*

Peering around livejournal, I came across
older_not_dead and discovered a host of prompts for a lot of fandoms in a writing challenge for couples over 40 years old (but not necessarily so in canon). All three of the ones for Sapphire and Steel were Silver/Steel.
...while I think it's an amusing twist to play with, it bugs me that it was all three. The chemistry between Steel and Sapphire is too much a part of the plot to be so ignored and while I will agree that Silver could have chemistry with a rock (indeed, it's arguable that he did have some with whatever he was building at any given moment), he unquestionably had more fun suggesting that Steel was involved with Sapphire and flirting with Sapphire himself than during anything that could be remotely interpreted as flirting with Steel. Grr.
But it strikes me that there are very few real obstacles to romance in the Western world these days. Women aren't locked in their apartments as a matter of course, and parental consent is not generally required or expected for adults. And romance does thrive on adversity, doesn't it? So perhaps there are some who feel they need the extra spice that slash can lend a romance.
Still. Steel's a romantic risk under all circumstances. You don't need it with him.
Or maybe there are just a lot of people out there who wish McCallum was gay.
