Small victories
Feb. 12th, 2012 01:50 pmI have a memory that is better than I really want it to be, full of tiny details that distract and confuse me when I try to focus on things that are more pressingly important and sometimes with things I would rather not remember.
But there are a few things I have managed to lose.
*A few months ago, as a joke, I introduced someone to myself and to my hair, giving it a name. For the remainder of the evening, that person kept on addressing my hair, sometimes by name. I was terribly worried that the name would stick. Fortunately, I have forgotten the name (please don't remind me of the name if you read this) and though I suspect the conversation was with Barrett, I am not sure and I have forgotten the context.
*I've known for years that one of my closest friends dislikes his middle name. As such, I have taken some pains to distract myself every time I hear it, and though I know it starts with a W, I have managed to forget it completely every time. You have no idea how proud I am of that.
*The easiest things for me to memorize are random series of numbers. As such, I used to have quite a lot of phone numbers in my mind, especially those of people who mattered to me. This was, however, something of a trial when I didn't feel I had a reason or right to call the people in question, because the numbers would sort of pulse in my mind. But I have successfully forgotten the phone number of Dan's dad's house, even though I used to call it regularly in high school. ...Oh shoot, I just remembered it. But not completely!
