On the risks of outdoor cats

Every now and then, someone asks me how I can stand letting my cat outside, knowing there's a big street right next to the house. I generally give two answers: that cats can learn car safety and that it's a quality of life issue. And then tack on that Raina is far too active for me to gladly keep her contained.
