Journal! An actual journal!
Jun. 20th, 2008 11:56 amToday my mom brought me to work in the morning to talk to an elderly gentleman who worked with computers way back when and even wrote a programming language - an offshoot of something called Prolog - back in the '80s. She said last night "he speaks computer, and doesn't really have anyone to talk to at the nursing home." So - I was brought in, mostly to listen and show I understand. He rather excitedly talked about types and sorts and what made his language just that bit different, while I did my best to keep up and have the occasional intelligent input. It's something Mama asks us to do every now and then - help one of her patients to not feel like they're shut away in a place to be forgotten, but still a person worth talking to and learning from. Mama does that sort of thing every day, and not just because it's her job. She is a very very good person, and I don't know how to match her.
Afterward, I wandered around downtown Berkeley vaguely looking for help wanted signs, but mostly just walking. I eventually wandered into a flower shop, where I bought a bunch of carnations that I decided to give to someone who could use a smile. (I ended up giving them to a girl at Tully's Coffee who'd been up since 5 AM.)
I also ran into Lizzie. She's canvassing for the Democratic National Committee, which she describes as "getting paid sh** wages to talk to evil people for a good cause". Apparently she dropped out of school shortly after she started it, but she's starting EMT training - which I think qualifies as major awesome. She's looking good, too, with short red hair - it makes her look older and more sophisticated. She misses the Bread Garden a bit too, but not like I do.
It's funny - last night I went running with Alex and ran into two different families of bakery customers at the track. Random distributions are cool like that.
