It is a special arrogance
To study you in all your ways
To come to know every quirk of thought
Each trick of light that makes the portrait
Of you and all you are
To keep the seeming of my wisdom and mystery
That I may seem greater, stronger, older
That I may still make myself the only thing
That you could ever return to see
Again in the fading daylight
Again as the bloom of dawn fades from this withered face.
To study you in all your ways
To come to know every quirk of thought
Each trick of light that makes the portrait
Of you and all you are
To keep the seeming of my wisdom and mystery
That I may seem greater, stronger, older
That I may still make myself the only thing
That you could ever return to see
Again in the fading daylight
Again as the bloom of dawn fades from this withered face.
